Your employment contract and outside work
Your main job keeps the household running, so it's worth checking that side work fits within your contract before you begin.
What to look for
- Outside work: some contracts require notice or permission before taking other paid work.
- Non-compete: you may be restricted from working for competitors or the same clients.
- Conflict of interest: overlap with your employer's business may need to be declared.
- Company time and equipment: side work on work devices or during working hours is usually forbidden.
- Intellectual property: some contracts claim what you create, especially if it relates to your role.
How to ask
Put the question to HR in writing: what the side work is, when you'd do it, and that it won't touch company time or equipment. Keep their answer.
When to get help
If a clause is broad and your side work is close to your profession, speak to an employment lawyer or your union first.
